Vegan activists promoting the diet in the US. Photo: AFPPopular Italian TV chef Gianfranco Vissani described vegans as "a sect" and said he would "kill them all", before being swiftly rebuked by a co-presenter on a cooking programme. The episode of 'In Onda' (On Air) featured a discussion about molecular gastronomy, a current cooking trend where food scientists study the chemical transformations that take place while food cooks in order to experiment with different tastes or creative appearance. When one chef described this kind of cooking as a "lifestyle", Vissani was swift to interject. "What do you mean, like vegans?" he asked, before launching into a tirade against vegans. "Vegans are like [members of] a sect, they're like Jehovah's Witnesses," he said. The outburst was met with laughter in the studio, but another chef, Davide Oldani, immediately retorted: "Gianfranco, don't say suc The Local...

Venice residents have had enough of tourists. Photo: Moyan BrennVenice locals have vented their frustration against tourists in Italy’s famous canal city, as mayor Luigi Brugnaro pledges to come down hard on unruly visitors. Flyers have appeared across the city, which attracts some 20 million people a year, over the last few days, telling tourists exactly what some locals think about their presence. “Tourists go away!!! You are destroying this area!” read the sign in English. One was even posted on the wall of one of Venice’s oldest churches, the San Giovanni in Bragora. Another, with the image of a pig throwing waste on the ground, was pinned to a rubbish bin along the Riva Degli Schiavoni, an overcrowded promenade by the waterfront at St Mark’s Basin. “Stop. I am not welcome,” the sign read. It’s unclear who the culprits are but Venice residents have long been frustrate The Local...

The Imam of Florence, Izzedin Elzir, waded into the controversial burqini debate on Thursday by posting a photo on Facebook of habit-wearing nuns splashing around on the edge of the shore – only for the social network to block his account. Wednesday's post - a response to some French beach resorts banning burqinis - gaered over 2,000 shares. But when he tried to access his account the next moing, Elzir, who is also the president of the Union of Italian Islamic Communities, found it was blocked. “It’s incomprehensible,” he was quoted by La Repubblica as saying. “I have to send them an ID document to reactivate it. They wanted to make sure it’s my account – it’s a very strange procedure." His account was back online by Friday evening, and the photo is still there. “I hope it wasn’t suspended because of a photo like this, which was shared by more than 2,000 people w The Local...

Como station. Photo: Muszka/GoogleMapsA Swiss aid organization has criticized the situation at the Swiss-Italian border, saying many refugees are left in “confusion and uncertainty”. Miriam Behrens, director of the Swiss Refugee Council (SFH), travelled to the border at Chiasso and to the Italian city of Como on Wednesday and Thursday to assess the situation of refugees and “ensure that the rights of people looking for protection are entirely guaranteed,” she said in a statement. Switzerland has been under fire for several weeks after tuing back thousands of migrants from the Swiss border. Any refugee has the right to claim asylum when they reach Switzerland. If they do, they should be registered with the Swiss migration office (SEM) and their application processed in due course. If they do not, because they want to transit through Switzerland and claim asylum in another countr The Local...

Italy's Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has a tumultuous few months ahead. Photo: Alberto Pizzoli/AFPBy the end of the year, Italy will face a day of reckoning - and it could be voters who seal the country's fate. Italians have always been pessimistic about their economy, and tend to have little faith in data that shows even just a modicum of prosperity. There was a spell of optimism when the energetic Matteo Renzi came to power in February 2014, ushering in reforms to reignite the debt-stricken economy and bringing political stability. His good work has won praise across Europe, but with most Italians yet to feel the benefit of those reforms, despondency has well and truly retued. So much so, it could propel them to exploit the upcoming referendum on constitutional reform – on which Renzi has staked his leadership - to make their frustration heard, a move many believe would be the catal The Local...

Rachele Bruni dedicated her medal to her family, her coach and her girlfriend Diletta Faina. Bruni, who won silver in the 10km swim in Rio on Monday, dedicated her medal to her family, her coach and her girlfriend Diletta Faina. Italian media and gay rights groups said it was a landmark moment for a country which has been slower to recognise same sex relationships than other Weste states. La Reppublica reported that Bruni was the first Italian sportsman or woman to acknowledge her sexuality, although it is possible other sports figures may have come out to friends and family without attracting media coverage. The man was caught with a group of eight illegal migrants in his van. Photo: Italian policeA man has been arrested by Italian police for allegedly smuggling migrants into France. The 37-year-old, a resident of Nice, was arrested in Breil-sur-Roya, a French mountain hamlet close to the border, after being caught carrying eight Eritreans, including three women and two children, in his Citroen van, Italian police said in a statement on Wednesday. The alleged people-smuggler was followed by police from Ventimiglia, an Italian border town which has become a migrant bottleneck. Police said the man was already known to police in the area for his involvement with “no border” activist groups. His arrest follows that of a Tunisian citizen, who was caught smuggling 28 migrants across the border, on July 13th. Tensions over the migrant situation have grown at the border in recent weeks. The Cinque Terre village of Veazza. Photo: Lucadea/FlickrHiking the coastal path that links the medieval fishing villages of Italy's Cinque Terre on its northwest coast is a stop-start affair these days. Nestled between azure expanses of sea and dry-stone terraced mountains that cascade into the Mediterranean, the rocky way is barely a foot (30 centimetres) wide in places. And as visitors arrive in ever greater numbers to see why this coer of the Riviera features on so many travel bucket lists, pedestrian traffic jams made the going slow on a sweltering August moing. But Chinese student Hardy Yang has no complaints on the crowded path between Monterosso and Veazza, two of the five villages that make up Cinque Terre. Italians politicians have put forward proposals to crackdown on cold-calling. Photo: PexelsTwo proposals from Italian MPs aim to crack down on the phenomenon of cold calls in Italy. The deputies from the Left Ecology Freedom party, which is led by Nichi Vendola, the former goveor of Puglia, have presented a proposed law "to tackle the phenomenon of abuse and invasion of citizens' privacy through telemarketing". The law would target not only cold callers, but also companies who call existing customers to send publicity material or to carry out market research. They noted that recent years have seen a considerable increase in what is known in Italy as "savage" telemarketing, described in the proposal as "improper and invasive practices" which leave consumers "oppressed by unwanted phonecalls". Burkinis have been banned at some beaches in France. Photo: AFPItaly will not follow France by allowing burkini bans on public beaches but is planning tighter regulation of imams and mosques, the country's interior minister said in Idea published on Wednesday. Angelino Alfano told the Corriere della Sera daily that he regarded France's restrictions on Islamic clothing as counter-productive because of the potential backlash it could provoke. "The interior ministry's responsibility is to guarantee security and to decide the severity of responses which however must never become provocations that could potentially attract attacks," Alfano said. Asked specifically about the burkini bans recently introduced by several French seaside towns, Alfano added: "It doesn't seem to me, alas, that the French model has worked for the best."
